(Chamaeleo chamaeleon)
Distribution and habitat
Native to tropical and subtropical regions of Africa, chameleons inhabit forests, scrublands, and savannas. At Natura Parc we recreate their natural habitat with controlled climates, dense vegetation, and vertical structures to provide well-being and encourage natural behavior.
Key features
- Color change: they use special cells to adapt to their environment, regulate temperature, and communicate.
- 360° vision: each eye moves independently, allowing them to detect prey and threats without moving.
- Projectile tongue: they capture insects from a distance with a tongue that can extend up to twice their body length, thanks to a highly adhesive mucosa.
Diet and behavior
They are diurnal predators, hunting insects such as crickets, grasshoppers, or worms. Their diet may also include small invertebrates and, occasionally, vegetables. The arboreal structure of their enclosure allows them to move freely and display their characteristic swaying gait.
Care in the park
At Natura Parc we maintain proper temperature and humidity, provide UVB lighting for their health and vitamin D formation, and enrich their environment with branches, safe plants, and drip water systems. This promotes their well-being and natural behavior, while allowing visitors to learn about their biology and the importance of their conservation.
