(Eudocimus ruber)

The scarlet ibis is one of the most striking birds in the world thanks to its spectacular bright red plumage. Native to South America and the Caribbean, it inhabits coastal areas, mangroves, marshes, and estuaries in countries such as Venezuela, Colombia, Brazil, and the Guianas.

Characteristics of the Scarlet Ibis
This bird measures between 55 and 63 cm and has a long downward-curved beak, ideal for searching for food in mud and shallow water. Its characteristic red color comes from its carotenoid-rich diet, mainly obtained from crustaceans such as shrimp and crabs. Juveniles have a grayish-brown plumage that turns scarlet upon reaching maturity.

Diet of the Scarlet Ibis
The scarlet ibis feeds on crustaceans, insects, mollusks, small fish, and occasionally seeds. Its foraging technique consists of moving its beak from side to side while walking through wet areas in search of food.

Conservation of the Scarlet Ibis
Although it is not considered globally endangered, the scarlet ibis faces local threats such as the destruction of mangroves and wetlands, pollution, and illegal hunting. It is a protected species in many areas to ensure the conservation of its populations.
