(Iguana iguana)
Distribution and habitat
The green iguana is an arboreal reptile native to the tropical regions of Central America, South America, and the Caribbean. It mainly inhabits humid forests near rivers and other bodies of water.
Characteristics
It can reach up to 2 meters in length, including the tail, and weigh between 4 and 8 kg. Its skin shows an intense green color in its juvenile stage, becoming more grayish or even orange in adulthood. It has a prominent dorsal crest and a dewlap, which it uses to regulate its body temperature.
Diet
It is strictly herbivorous, feeding on leaves, flowers, and fruits. A fiber-rich diet is essential to maintain its digestive health.
Conservation
Although it is not globally endangered, the green iguana faces threats from the illegal pet trade and the loss of its natural habitat.
